Eden - Four Months

Four months.  Really?  Geez!

Well my four month old is one happy baby today!  She's always happy... but for some reason today she is HAPPY!  So happy that it was REALLY HARD to get this picture!  She kept flailing around and squirming off the mat while laughing uncontrollably!  She is just laughing away as I sit here typing this.  It makes my heart feel oh so good.

And even though she's getting older, she's still a teensy little thing!  She's still wearing her 0-3 month clothes.  That's great because we had A LOT of clothes!  When I set up her closet I really thought there would be no way she would ever get to wear them all, but here we are going into month 5 still wearing them!

On Wednesday I got to teach my 3rd, 4th and 5th graders one more time.  After Eden was born, I asked the girl who has filled in for me if she would please take a day off so that I could come see the kids (without Eden) and teach again.  I had a wonderful time!  It was SO NICE to be back in the classroom talking and teaching and just doin' my thing!  But as wonderful as it was, I missed Eden terribly, and it just made me realize that I made the right decision in not going back in April and finishing the schoolyear like I originally was going to do.  I'll go back to teaching one day, but right now I'm just going to enjoy my baby!

And I'm REALLY EXCITED because Dustin and I are going to take Eden swimming this weekend!  I can't wait to get her little swimmy suit back on her and plunk those little chunky legs into the water!  :)

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

It's Good To Be Queen

Ah, motherhood?  How do you describe it?  It's hard... Impossible probably... to put those feelings into words.  The best I can do is to say it's like your heart explodes... but in a good way!  Nothing could have prepared me.  I knew it was going to be wonderful, but it's so much better.  I knew I would love it, but it's so much better.  I knew I would love her, but it's so much more.  I loved her when I found out I was pregnant, I loved her when I first felt her kick, I loved her when they put her in my arms, but today I love her more.  Each day that goes by I fall more and more in love with Eden.  And it's a love that I cannot put into words.  So I'll just say that it's like my heart explodes.

For Mother's Day, my mom sent me two books... One of them is called Mother's Love containing true stories from the Animal Kingdom.  The cat that walked into a burning building five times to save each one of her kittens and then collapsed once they were all safe, the dog that adopted a baby squirrel into her litter of puppies, the mother elephant that risked her life to save her baby from a flood, etc.  In the book it talks about maternal instincts and how nature just takes over when you become a mom.  I believe that's so true.  Right before Eden was born, I remember panicking slightly and telling my mom that I was worried that when she cried I wouldn't know what to do.  My mom said, "You'll know."  No sentence was ever truer.  From the very first time Eden let out a wail, I knew exactly what to do.

I love being a mother.  LOVE IT.  How cliche to say it, but it's really the best thing that ever happened to me.  I feel silly even saying that sentence because I mean, really... How obvious!  But in honor of Mother's Day, I have to say it!

Last week, Dustin and I went to watch a Little League baseball game.  As we're walking up the sidewalk to the field, people are turning to look at Eden and strangers are telling us congratulations and how pretty she is.  A mom came up to me and said, "Don't you just feel like a queen?"  Yeah, I do.  That's a good way to put it.  I am absolutely on top of the world with my little baby.  But I'm only a queen because I have this little princess.

She was sick a couple of days ago.  She woke up on Friday with a cold - coughing, sneezing, runny nose, glassy eyes.  It broke my heart.  It seemed even more pathetic because she hardly cried... you could look at her and know she felt miserable... and she would try her hardest to smile at  you.  It was so sad!  We had a looonnnnggg Friday night of saline nose drops, a nasal aspirator (aka the boogie sucky) and Little Colds Baby Rub.  Oh, and lots of snuggles.  By Saturday night, she was back to normal (we knew she was back to normal because we could no longer hear her breathing from across the room), and I couldn't help but feel ridiculously proud of myself for taking such good care of her.  I even bragged to Dustin that I rocked at being a mom. :)

Dustin did so good for me for Mother's Day.  He even stretched it into two days and gave me an entire Mother's Day weekend.  He got up early on Saturday and went to the store and came back with a baby rose plant (I'm going to try REALLY HARD to keep it alive!), a giant card from "Eden" and all the stuff to make me a 5-course meal.

My baby is such a genius, and with just a little help from Dad she signed her card to me herself!

Here she's thinking hard about what she wants to write in the card...

She decided to go with the classic "Love Eden".

Dustin cooked pretty much alllll day on Saturday for me.  He would get one course ready, I would come eat it, then I would go about my day while he started working on the next course and then would call me back into the kitchen when that one was ready.  We had:

Course 1: bread dipped in olive oil, salami and parmesan cheese
Course 2: salad with his homemade dressing
Course 3: steamed crab
Course 4: homemade lobster ravioli
Course 5: chocolate dipped strawberries

The only one I got involved with was the lobster ravioli.  I've always wanted to make ravioli from scratch, so I put myself in charge of making the pasta.  Once I had the rolling pin in hand and was once again covered in flour, I remembered vowing after Eden's Baptism to not do anything with dough for a LONNNGGGG time!  Oh well, we had so much fun!

On Sunday, Dustin made breakfast, and after church, we went shopping.  Dustin was the best... He pushed Eden in her stroller and followed me around the store and then sat outside the dressing room while I tried on all my stuff.  And he never complained.  Then he took me to lunch at Pappasitos, and I really think that after everything I ate this weekend, I gained back all the baby weight I lost!

I really did have the best first Mother's Day.  There's nothing else I would have wanted.  I'm seriously considering having my first Mother's Day card framed!  Am I crazy?

The card that Dustin gave me from him said, "Life isn't always a fairy tale.  The castle gets messy, the little peasants sometimes revolt, and we both know your prince isn't always so charming.  But you handle it royally.  Thank you for making every single day feel like Happily-Ever-After.  Happy Mother's Day to the Queen of our home, the love of my life."  It was the absolute perfect card to get me.  After I read it, I said, "You did good!"  He smiled.  He knew he did good.

These days my life is pretty simple.  I cook, I clean, I take care of Eden.  But I really do feel like a queen.  I really do feel like the luckiest girl in the world.  I am so blessed.

Two quotes from Mother's Love:

A mother's love for her child is like nothing else in the world.  It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.  -Agatha Christie

Making the decision to have a child is momentous.  It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.  -Elizabeth Stone

And another picture of Eden... just 'cause:

Blessed

Eden was baptized last Saturday, April 28th.  It was such a beautiful day!

In front of our family and friends, Dustin, my brother, Marshall, my best friend, Kate and I dedicated Baby Girl to the Lord.  How wonderful.  How powerful.  How absolutely amazing.

Some photos from the day:

I mentioned how my dad and Susie went to Paris a few months ago and brought back two dresses for Eden... One she wore on Easter... And this is the other one.  I adore this little dress.  As soon as I saw it, I knew she had to wear it somewhere special.  I decided to have her baptized in it, because what's more special than that?  I took it out of the box MANY times before her Baptism just to look at it because I loved it so much!  Baby Girl was of course stunning in it!

Back in 2008 I was fortunate enough to go to Israel.  Dustin was going to be baptized a few weeks later so I brought back holy water from the River Jordan for him to be baptized with.  After he was baptized, I scooped the water back up to save.  Eden was baptized with that same water.  I again saved the water, and it's sitting on a shelf in my living room to be used on any other Baby Hargraves Dustin and I might have.  I bought the glass bottle from Hobby Lobby... When I brought the water from Israel, I just had it in a plastic water bottle! :)

I was nervous about how Eden was going to react to water being dumped on her head.  She's still not a huge fan of bath time, but she was perfectly content.

After the service, everyone came back to our house for lunch.  Dustin made ribs and chicken so of course they were delicious because anything that Dustin makes is delicious.  Thank you to everyone who brought appetizers and sides and desserts.  I made sugar cookies and rolls.  I decided to make the sugar cookies early in the week, and then Dustin asked me if I would make the Texas Roadhouse Copycat Rolls.  I had made them before, and he loved them.  At the time it didn't seem like a big deal so I said yes.  Between making 5 dozen sugar cookies and 5 dozen rolls, I was in the kitchen for two days covered in flour and rolling out dough.  It will be a LONG time before I will mess with dough again.  I was so sick of freaking dough by Friday night!

I wanted to have petit fours instead of a cake because they are wee and cute... just like her!

Dustin, Eden and I are so blessed.  The day was perfect, and we are so happy that we were able to celebrate Eden's special day with so many friends and family.  Eden was so happy on Saturday.

She's still recovering though.  The day wore her (and Dustin apparently) out!  She slept yesterday for five hours straight!

Eden and Dustin stayed sleeping like this for a while after everyone left!  It makes my heart happy.

I was there to hear your borning cry,
I'll be there when you are old.
I rejoiced the day you were baptized,
to see your life unfold.
I was there when you were but a child,
with a faith to suit you well;
In a blaze of light you wandered off
to find where demons dwell.

When you heard the wonder of the Word
I was there to cheer you on;
You were raised to praise the living Lord,
to whom you now belong.
If you find someone to share your time
and you join your hearts as one,
I'll be there to make your verses rhyme
from dusk 'till rising sun.

In the middle ages of your life,
not too old, no longer young,
I'll be there to guide you through the night,
complete what I've begun.
When the evening gently closes in,
and you shut your weary eyes,
I'll be there as I have always been
with just one more surprise.

I was there to hear your borning cry,
I'll be there when you are old.
I rejoiced the day you were baptized,
to see your life unfold.

Eden - Three Months

My baby is pretty much awesome.  And she gets more awesome every day!  Some things I'm loving about my three month old right now:
  • the way she smiles ALL the time now
  • how excited she gets everytime she sees her daddy
  • how when she gets really, really excited, her little arms and legs flail around uncontrollably
  • the way her warm breath feels on my neck as she falls asleep on my shoulder
  • how when I hold her on my shoulder, she now wraps her little arms around my neck like she's hugging me
  • how she turns to find me when she hears my voice
  • the way she snuggles up against me in bed in the mornings
  • how she talks back to me now when I talk to her
Yep, pretty awesome!

Okay, so that ridiculously adorable picture that I posted yesterday... I just love that picture!  I couldn't wait to show Dustin how cute it was!  So he comes home from work yesterday:

Jenni: Oh my gosh, I took the cutest picture of Eden today!  You have to come see it!
Dustin:  She looks like Tupac.
Jenni:  WHAT?!?!?!
Dustin:  Seriously.  Google Tupac.
Jenni:  I can't believe you just said my baby looks like Tupac!
Dustin:  It's okay, she's still really, really cute as Tupac.

So I google Tupac, and this is what I find.

Yeah, I kinda see it.

Eden does a great Tupac impression!  And Dustin's right... she's a very, very cute Tupac!

A Ridiculously Adorable Picture

I don't have anything to say.  I just really, really like that picture!

Easter Weekend

Christ has arisen, He sets us free;
Alleluia, to Him praises be.
Jesus is living!  Let us all sing;
He reigns triumphant, Heavenly King.

I love Easter.  I can never decide which one I like more... Easter or Christmas?  It's such a hard decision!  If you ask me on Christmas, I'll probably say Christmas.  If you ask me on Easter, I'll probably say Easter.  On all the other days of the year, I'm just confused about it!  Easter does have the added bonus of (usually) gorgeous weather though!  (Although I have experienced a few Christmases here in Texas with the same 80 degree temperatures.)

Eden and I started the Easter weekend early by hitting up the Faith Academy Easter parties on Thursday afternoon.  It was great to see all the kids again.  It was great seeing all the kids go crazy over Eden again.  She was even given her first candy-filled Easter eggs from a couple of the kids.  (I ate the candy... Sorry, Eden!)

On Friday, Dustin and I had a date day!  It was our first little date since Eden was born.  My Granny watched Eden while Dustin and I went to go see a movie and eat crawfish.  And I just have to take a moment here to comment on the deliciousness of my movie snacks... The past three times that I've gone to see a movie I had gestational diabetes.  And Dustin would sit right next to me and eat popcorn and drink icees RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!  HOW RUDE!  But yesterday was heaven as I sat there shoveling buttery popcorn and m&ms into my mouth... at the same time!  We had a wonderful time even though I never stopped thinking about my Baby Girl.  I missed her so much!

Dustin left early Saturday morning for Georgia to go to the Masters.  The weather was absolutely perfect here on Saturday.  Warm and sunny with a light breeze.  Bliss.  I spent the morning packing because we spent the night with my grandma in Katy on Saturday night.

Ok, I have to take another moment here to comment on how different packing has become since a baby came into the picture.  I used to be the lightest packer EVER!  It is something that my dad drilled into my head starting at a young age... Pack light, pack light, pack light!  My family once went to Italy for 10 days, and we were only each allowed one backpack for the whole trip!  Pack light, pack light, pack light and you NEVER check luggage!  For two reasons: 1. The airline could (gasp!) lose it!  2. It takes forever to stand around waiting for your stupid bag to come off the plane when you could already be sightseeing and exploring!  I took these lessons to heart.  And everywhere I went, I PACKED LIGHT.  When Dustin came along, I started drilling it into his head as well!  In the beginning of our relationship, I would stand over him screaming like a drill sergeant as he put things into his suitcase: "ARE YOU INSANE?  YOU DON'T NEED THAT!  PACK LIGHT, PACK LIGHT, PACK LIGHT!"  And then Baby Eden came along.  I have gone overnight with her twice now - last weekend when we went to my mom's and then on Saturday.  It now requires that I pack up my entire house.  I bring everything... things I don't need but feel like I should take JUST IN CASE!  The back of my car and every seat was loaded down with bags and clothes and diapers and blankets.  Little Eden was in her little carseat just surrounded by STUFF!

Anyways!  Before heading to Katy, we stopped by my dad and Susie's house.  We sat out in the gorgeous weather eating porkchops and watching the Masters on TV.  (Correction: My dad watched the Masters on TV.  I cannot think of anything more boring than watching golf on TV!)

Then Eden and I went to Katy, and I transferred all the contents of my house to my grandma's house.

My mom also came to Katy for Easter, and we woke up bright and early on Sunday morning and headed to church.  I absolutely love my grandma's church.  It's beautiful, the choir is amazing and the sermons are always wonderful.  This was my first time to go to her church on Easter so I was super excited!  And I was super excited about Eden's first Easter dress!  My dad and Susie went to Paris a few months ago, and they came back with two absolutely gorgeous little dresses for Eden.  One of them became her Easter dress!  She was the best dressed person in church all decked out in her Roberto Cavalli creation!

Yep, that's drool all over the top of her dress in that first picture!  :)  I was just thrilled that she didn't throw up on it!  When I got back home yesterday, I put the dress back on it's hanger and hung it back up in her closet.  It's too pretty and special to pack up with the rest of her clothes when the time comes, so it'll probably hang in her closet all the days of my life - her first little Easter dress.

Church was also special (you know, besides Jesus rising from the dead and all) because we had 4 generations there.

I realllly wish I wasn't holding Eden where you see her diaper like that!  Oh well!  My grandma is in such good health that we just may have a 5 generation picture one day!

After church we went back to my grandma's house where I gave Eden her first little Easter basket.

She only liked her Easter basket when there was a pacifier in her mouth!  Haha!  Dustin and I bought her a personalized Easter basket from Pottery Barn Kids (she's ready to find those Easter eggs next year!), a stuffed chick, Peter Rabbit books, and a onesie with a rabbit on it to wear after church.  See:

The four of us ate Easter lunch at Babin's, and then we went back to my grandma's again where I... took more pictures of Eden!  I spend approximately fifty percent of my life photographing my child!

Like my jeans?  I do!  I knew colored jeans were "in" right now... but I didn't care much until I saw a picture of Kate Middleton wearing coral colored jeans.  Then I was all over that like white on rice!  I adore Kate Middleton!  (In my dreams, she and Prince William have a son, and Eden marries him and becomes Princess of England, and I get to live in a castle because I'm her mom and stuff!)  Anyways, I love my jeans, but I have a feeling this is gonna be one of those things where Eden looks at these pictures 15 years from now and says, "MOM!  What the heck are you wearing?!  Orange jeans?  Really?!"

Sunday afternoon, my cousin Emilie and her husband Trent stopped by my grandma's, and it was great seeing them and catching up!  Eden and I said adios to everyone after a couple of hours and then headed back home to see my Granny and Pops and Harold and Robin and Mason and Cameron.  Eden was given more Easter presents including these sunglasses:

I guess she has a little more growing to do!

It was a fabulous, wonderful weekend!  But I think it wore Eden out!  She slept last night from 8:30 until 5 this morning!  That's the longest she's ever slept!  And I have to admit that after not seeing her for a few hours on Friday, and then sharing her with everybody on Saturday and Sunday, I'm really looking forward to spending all day today just me and her!  She's allllll mine, and I'm allllll hers!  :)

And we're both really looking forward to Daddy coming home tonight!  Yay!

I'd Rather Be At The Beach

Wow, I cannot believe it's already the month of April!  It seems like just yesterday that I fell asleep on New Year's Eve at 10:00... :)

So I bought Eden the cutest little swimsuit.  And as soon as it came in the mail, I COULD NOT WAIT TO PUT IT ON HER AND TAKE HER TO THE BEACH!  It consumed my every thought!  Seriously!  I was just so excited!  So last Friday, I decided to pack up and make the 4 hour drive to visit my mom since she so conveniently lives close to the beach.

Of course I was super happy to visit my mom, BUT I WAS REALLY HAPPY TO PUT EDEN IN HER LITTLE BATHING SUIT AND STICK HER FEET IN THE OCEAN!

Yeah, so she didn't really like it at first...

I stuck her feet in, and she let out a little squeal and tried to pull them up.  The water is still pretty chilly this time of year!  But then she got over it and was content to let me stick her little toesies in the water all I wanted.  Which was a lot.  Because I LOVE the beach and the ocean!

Just look how adorable she is in her little swimmy suit!

We had the best weekend!  It's always so nice to go visit your mom!  They buy you your favorite foods and favorite candy and help you change diapers and pick up after you and take care of you and all those things that moms are supposed to do!  And I could just relax.  I got to read an ENTIRE BOOK over the weekend!  Something that has not happened in months!  I slept late, rocked on the front porch in the mornings, read my book, took walks in the evenings with Eden in her stroller.  These are little, simple things, but they made for a fantastic weekend.  I plan to go visit my mom lots more times - then I can buy Eden more swimming suits!
